Today we hike through the Altenfeld meadows and fields on the edge of the Rothaargebirge Nature Park. The village of Altenfeld, first mentioned in a document in 1541, is idyllically situated between Winterberg and Schmallenberg. A small park with a water treading pool, the St. Hubertus Chapel, a real treasure, which is one of the oldest buildings in the village and has a beautiful baroque altar, a playground and, last but not least, the many cycling and hiking trails offer plenty of variety. We hike between wonderfully wide fields, on wooded heights and reach the rest area "Am Eichholz" and the "Krauseholz" estate. The latter was first mentioned in a document in 1460 and has its own chapel, also with a Baroque altar dating from 1726. We pass the remains of storm Kyrill and the Leiserstein, which is also known as the "Vierländereck" because the districts of Altenfeld, Bödefeld, Elpe and Valme meet here. We also see the practice slope for hang gliders and paragliders from the "West German Hang Gliding School".

From the starting point, Landgasthof Wüllner, we head west. After crossing Walbecke, we turn right after 200 m in front of a memorial cross. A short break at the memorial cross is recommended. Now follow the asphalted field path marked Al4, slowly ascending through meadows and fields. The higher you go, the more beautiful the views become. We leave the Al4 on a path that is no longer asphalted and continue uphill following the "B in a circle" markings to the edge of the forest. At the "Leiserstein" sign before the edge of the forest, we turn left. After a short steep ascent, we reach the "Vierländereck", the Leiserstein. There are still remnants of Kyrill up here. Back along the cul-de-sac (be careful in wet weather!), we walk left towards Elpe Hütte through a wooded area and soon reach a wide aisle that serves as a training slope for hang-gliders and paragliders. There are wonderful views from here. About 50 m back, turn left and walk through a mixed forest. After approx. 1 km, we take a sharp left at a crossroads. Here we find a bench with three birch trees. Continue right along a meadow path and later a paved path without markings downhill past a barn to the K16. Now turn right to the Elpe bridge at the Eichholz parking lot. At the water of the Elpe, we admire a Schnade (border) stone, which marks the border between Altenfeld and Elpe. At A6, we hike uphill to the right through mixed forest to the Einsiedlerhof Krauseholz, which was mentioned as a free nobleman's farm as early as 1460, and reach the Montanus Chapel, an estate chapel that is around 250 years old with a magnificent baroque altar. Take the same route back to the bridge at the parking lot. Turn right onto K16 and immediately opposite, turn left onto a field path and walk back to Altenfeld on the A5 through the "Fellebaum" and slightly uphill on a paved path to the left. Our hike ends with a visit to the Altenfeld Hubertus Chapel (1654), one of the oldest buildings in the village with a beautiful baroque altar. After enjoying the art, we walk back to the starting point of our hike on an asphalt path and later parallel to the L740 on a footpath on the right.Trail scouts: Elke and Helmut Otto© Hiking magazine
